The “gendering” of narratives has had a long history and been all-pervasive. My analysis looks at the many-layered intersection of such gendering across cultures and the commonality of much of the narrative discourse despite culture-specific deviations. Women’s voices and the greater visibility of female discourse have opened up the possibilities of new, often conflicting interpretations. Are these conflicts irreconcilable? Dialectical in nature? Do we speak of Histories? Herstories? Ourstories?

The lecture examines these and several related issues, drawing on examples from literatures and canonical texts, and reviews how changes in perceptions and consciousness have or have not transformed narratives of gender.
