Bijon B. Shaha, former Director of the Electronics Test and Development Centre, Goa, a Master of Engineering from the Calcutta University, has experience of more than 40 years in guiding, evaluating, and providing training to different industries in various parts of India covering the areas of : *Testing and Calibration * Management
System Assessment for Certification * Industry training through seminars and workshop Currently he is involved in providing training to industry and conducting Management System Audits.

In the last 20 years the lives of common men have been radically and irreversibly changed due to the digital revolution started by interconnection of computers on Intranets and the Internet Everything today relies on computers and the Internet. Whether it is communication, entertainment, shopping, education or money-transaction we are inextricably tied up to the internet. Although importance of information security is not new, in todays uncontrolled digital world of the internet has also brought us many new threats and new dangers, and if we are not careful, if we lack a strategy of defence, these threats can create havoc in our lives. Crackers, attackers, or intruders regularly use malicious codes like viruses, worms, and Trojan horses, use social engineering, and even hardware spying devices to steal, to alter, to destroy our vital information causing loss of money and reputation, theft of our identity, alter public opinions and at times can even endanger national security. A logical and scientific approach would be to analyze various vulnerabilities, whether human or technical, which are exploited by such threats. The threats must not be allowed to exploit the vulnerabilities if our information is to be protected. Information security which basically is concerned about Confidentiality, Integrity, availability of a required piece of information involves protecting our information by preventing, detecting, and responding to attacks and is firmly rooted in methodical risk analysis and risk treatment. The presentation will overview the above points in a language suitable for the general audience.
