Dr. T. C. A. Raghavan, IFS (Retd.) is Director-General, Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), India’s oldest foreign policy think tank and designated an institution of national importance. Dr. Raghavan retired as the Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan (2013-15) where he had earlier served as Deputy High Commissioner (2003-07). He has also been the Indian High Commissioner to Singapore (2009-13) and has served in Kuwait, the United Kingdom, and Bhutan. In New Delhi, he held key positions including that of Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs dealing with Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran. A PhD in history from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (1992), Dr. Raghavan’s current interests are historical research, strategic analysis and the diplomatic and intellectual history of modern India. His first book Attendant Lords: Bairam Khan and Abdur Rahim, Courtiers and Poets in Mughal India (HarperCollins, 2017) was awarded the prestigious Mohammad Habib Memorial Prize by the Indian History Congress. His second book The People Next Door: The Curious History of India’s Relations with Pakistan (HarperCollins, 2017) has been extremely well received. Dr. Raghavan writes, lectures and participates regularly in discussions on issues relating to Indian and South Asian diplomatic history, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan and South East Asia.

The lecture will give a broad sweep of India-Pakistan relations since 1947. Its aim will be to provide an overall sense of the relationship through its crests and troughs, how it has remained frozen even as the world in and around South Asia has evolved and changed and finally what the future may or may not hold.
